Soccer at school

Paraguayans LOVE soccer. This past Saturday they showed the Paraguay-Chile game on tv and the whole country practically shut down to party and watch it together. People took their tv's outside for family gatherings. Church activities were held one hour earlier! People paraded around with their Paraguayan sports shirts...they were on sale for 5$ in one store.

Managing the ball between your feet starts at a early age. Yes, Edson is getting good at this! Little kids learn the rules soooo fast. Teens kick hard and can leave ball bruises on your body that last for a week or two...or kick marks that really must have hurt!

The greatest of players, I guess, starts out like this...a rainy day at school...LET'S PLAY SOCCER. These are the sixth graders at Colegio Privado Adonai.

(These pictures, once again, are from Nancy, by the way...)

I like to watch my kids play sports, but I never have figured out all of the rules behind the games. Do YOU understand what is happening at a soccer match?

I now know alot about soccer, but I don't remember ANY rules of American Football! hahaha! Once I was goalie and got my jaw knocked out of place, but I stopped the goal!!! Remember Liz?

Stephen couldn't wait to learn to play soccer when we were there, but then he saw the younger kids playing one day and decided that it was too rough for him and he never participated after that. It's a rough sport!

Ron's kids area already teaching Josiah (14 mo. old) how to kick the soccer ball with his feet. Actually, he's really getting the hang of it! (Except that he's still a bit unsteady on his feet as a fast speed, and certainly has problems on a grassy surface!)

It amazes me, too, about how they can volley the ball back and forth and if they get hurt, nobody complains. Edson has some good teachers!

Yes, I remember. Not many North Americans play with the passion of South Americans. (Although I also remember Laurel determined to prove that a girl can be goalie, even if her hand is in a cast...)
