POPCORN!!!

If you know the Schleys, you know that popcorn is the family favorite! It all started with my dad. He would pop himself a whole Tupperware bowlful and say that we were only allowed a couple of handfuls. Yeah, he always got the bowl. Mom would by popcorn by 25 lb bags. Dad preferred the white popcorn, but mom usually bought both kinds (that was 50 lbs of popcorn on hand!). Mom would make caramel corn for teachers at school and church things, we would put on flavourings or powdered cheddar cheese. If company would come we’d make a couple of batches. Popcorn was just our favorite snack!
Fortunately (or unfortunately for some) it is one of the cheapest snack foods here in Paraguay. We don’t have isles and isles of choices…maybe only five different things. So, popcorn has become OUR family’s favorite snack, too. Thanks to Grandpa Schley that Tupperware bowl is usually full in the afternoon and we can all enjoy this “healthy” snack. Once we had visitors from the States and the son went to tell his mom that I made this amazing popcorn…in a pan! He called her down to have me teach her how to do it…in a pan. He’s only seen it made in a microwave!
Taking after my dad, I am proud to say that I make some of the best popcorn in the world and it ALMOST NEVER BURNS. I start my kids off young, but I did wait until Edson was 1 before I gave him the whole kernel.

Karen, Your Dad laughed and laughed at this blog. This tradition started way before I came into the Schley family. Grandpa Schley, SR. would have a bowl of it every Sunday afternoon, and sometimes even during the week.
Your Dad still has popcorn just about every evening. He's learned from Uncle Bruce this summer how to pop it in the microwave, re-using the bag several times before throwing it out. (Of course you have to buy a batch of microwave popcorn to begin with.) He has the the salt and butter pat measured out, along with 1/3 cup of popcorn, folding the bag over about 1/4 inch, stapling with 2 staples, and popping it for 2 min. in a 1000 or 1100 watt microwave. He even has a stapler and staple remover handy in my wax paper drawer. I prefer this method of his because I don't have to always scrub out the pan! And he does such a good job with it. It's very flavorful, and he enjoys it so much. I see him lift up a kernel and examine it before he pops it into his mouth. It has a unique shape, or is quite large. He's been counting the seeds when finished (very few). Of course, we'll be eating it this way for a long time since Di and Gabe gave him 50 pounds last Christmas!!
Keep enjoying it and thinking about us when you do!

Dad is a more frequent popcorn eater than Grandpa, and we usually have it 4 or 5 times a week. Sometimes POPCORN is our supper.

Family traits cross borders with us, don't they? I'm thankful Fred is a popcorn man, too! We've always got a bowl of popcorn made as well! Dianne was always the best popcorn maker in our family and we would make her pop it for us because she did it perfectly! I hope Gabe, Lily and Maci can appreciate her gift, too. Thanks for passing on the trait to your kids, Grandpa!

This is a Carter family tradition, too, started long before I became a Carter -- huge lunch (dinner, they call it) on Sunday, followed by snacks only Sunday night, always centered around a big bowl of popcorn!

Aunt Carole, I remember the carmel corn you always made and how good it was! And I remember that popcorn bowl always out, too!

Up until the day Grampa Pavkov died, the "angels" ususally Trudy) would pop corn for him before they left for the evening. He said it helped him sleep better.
I remember U. Russ as a kid going to bed early (he still does)on popcorn nights and telling Gram to put his share of popcorn in a bowl and hide it in the oven so he has some the next day.
We also enjoy the popcorn...especially on the stove popped in my Whirly Popper. Yummy!
Thanks for the memories!

Anyone know a good method for a 400W microwave? Also, I'm used to cooking it over an electric stove. I've burned it several times on our gas stove. Who makes the best popcorn? You have an open invitation to come show me how (once again). Anyone know how to pop rice? Popcorn is not as popular here. I haven't found a source for a 25lb bag yet.

Karen, while I was in Paraguay I got an email from my aunt and uncle that said they just found a perfect christmas present for me at a garage sale. Turns out is was a popcorn popper for the stove. i guess I wrote them an email about how great your stove-popped popcorn was, and how I was never going to go back to the microwave kind!
